I am fairly sure this is a pencil cactus. The red parts are pears which is why it is also called Christmas Cactus. Ocotilla has much thicker greyish colored woody stems that are armed with hefty curved barbs. It will suddenly sprout leaves along the stems and red flowers on top anytime it rains but these drop off and it becomes naked barbed woody stems again when no moisture is available. Pencil Cactus, on the other hand, has thinner green stems and jointed sections that break off very easily and which are lined with fine stickers rather than curved barbs, each piece will root & start a new cactus. They form tangled thickets.
